Ninja-kun: Majou no Bouken  Jaleco (Tose)1985Ninja-Kun: Majou no Bouken, Ninja Kid: Castle of Demons Adventure***Arcade port of the first game in the "Ninja-kun" series. You control a little ninja who has to defeat each enemy on screen. The game's formula is reminiscent of many other games of its time. You have very few stages packed with enemies. Once you have cleared all stages the game repeats itself just with more and deadlier enemies. Graphics are basic and the sound and music are annoying. It is a bit beyond me why this game started a successful series... labelimageminimize
Ninja Jajamaru-kun  Jaleco (Tose)1985***While UPL brought the official sequel to Ninja-kun into the arcades, Jaleco made this spin-off sequel for the Famicom. The game basically stays true to the original game. Kill all enemies on screen with your shuriken throwing little ninja to make it to the next scene where more enemies await you. Inside a level you reach higher platforms by destroying brick walls by jumping headfirst against them *ouch*. Instead of the mainly up-and-down scrolling levels of the original Ninja-kun game, Ninja Jajamaru-kun scrolls horizontally. By the graphics and sound you can see that it is a rather early Famicom game. labelimageminimize
Ikki  Sunsoft (Tose)1985Run around, collecting all money bags scattered around the level and defend yourself against attacking ninjas. Only four rather short stages and a bonus round were left from the original eight arcade stages. The game is not free of some problems. Sometimes your enemies spawn in unfair spots and the fact that the game starts to scroll only when the player is already near the edge of the screen makes it even worse. On the other hand the game's start isn't very difficult. I was rather disappointed to come to the end of the fourth stage only after a few minutes in my first try. The fifth stage just repeats the first stage with more difficult enemies. The motivation to play on drops down drastically from there.***In this game you play rebel farmer who defends his section of land from marauding ninjas. This is based on Ikkō-ikki history. Presumably the ninjas were hired by the Samurai to wreak havoc? (I'm not that familiar with Japanese history). The farm land is a maze-like area that the player must navigate while the Ninjas can piratically fly. They Approach from the north with smaller numbers from the flanks. The player uses his boomerang to kill hundreds of them (maybe these are Ninja school dropouts). There are also Japanese coins to be collected in a Pac-Man like manner. The player does not remain centered in the screen and most scroll it by advancing dangerously close to the edge. Only the protagonist knows the boundaries of his land and stops on them (this information is not revealed to the player before reaching the edge).
This game was released only in Japan.

Ninja Hattori-kun: Ninja wa Shuugyou de Gozaru no Maki  Hudson Soft1986忍者ハットリ君 忍者は修行でござるの巻, Little Ninja Hattori: Ninja Winding of Bamboo Basket Discipline (?)***The game Ninja Hattori-kun is based on some manga/anime series for kids. You control a ninja from left to right through scrolling platform levels, avoid or kill enemies (mostly other ninjas) by throwing shuriken at them. The game was a million seller in Japan, although one might wonder why. The controls are quite poor, the graphics and sound are also on the weak side. Maybe the game profited from being released in the wake of [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game]. labelimageminimize
Gegege no Kitarō: Youkai Daimakyou  Bandai (Tose)1986This game is based on a manga/anime series that is rather unknown in the western world. That must have been the reason why they changed some sprites and background music for the US release of the game and retitled it "Ninja Kid". The gameplay stays the same in both versions though. Walking on an overworld map, your task is to challenge a boss enemy in the main castle. However to be able to enter the castle you have to clear other (randomly generated) stages which have its entrances also appear on the overworld map. In these stages you have to kill x enemies or collect y items in order to complete the stage. Collecting a special item on your way, you are ready to face the boss in the final castle. Once he as beaten the game continues on to the next overworld screen. The graphics and music are ok, as are the controls. I just wished the game had some ingame storyline or something else that wouldn't make it feel so much like a conglomeration of little standard stages. The fact that the game has no ending but eventually loops endlessly doesn't help. labelimageminimize
The Legend of Kage  Taito1986Lead your super-jumping and shuriken-throwing hero on his way to rescue a kidnapped princess through five rather small stages. Each stage has a certain "goal" like killing x amount of evil ninjas, killing a certain enemy or just reaching the end of the level. Controls in this game are rather weak. The super-big jumps are not really controllable, moreoften than you want you jump right into approaching enemies without being able to control your jump when in midair. Graphics and music are merely average and nothing special. Some levels are very short and after rescuing the princess, a small cutscene is played where the princess is just kidnapped again. Only after rescuing her three times you will be rewarded with a little congratulations screen until... well she is kidnapped once again.***
[Zerothis]***This classic ninja-action game first appeared in arcades in 1985 and became instantly popular. As the Iga ninja named "Kage", players embark on an action-packed quest as they move toward a magic castle where the Princess "Kiri" is held captive by "Yohshirou Yukikusa." To stay alive, players move vertically and horizontally through forest and castle environments and execute massive jumps, all the while using throwing-star knives and a sword to take down hordes of enemies.

Kanshakudama Nage Kantarou no Toukaidou Gojuusan Tsugi  Sunsoft (Tose)1986You are playing a fireworks-maker on his way from the city of Kyouto to the city of Edo (Tokyo) via the Toukaidou route. This route is a famous historical route which consists of 53 stations. Each of the games levels represents one station of the route. Since the game only has 21 levels not all stations are included. And of course the route is dangerous, because you are followed and attacked by henchmen of an evil merchant who wants to steal the secret of fireworks manufacturing from you. The game itself is a standard platform game. You make your way from left to right, avoid enemies or kill them via throwing explosives. On the way you can collect hidden items which help passing some otherwise especially nasty enemies. Also you have to find gold coins, which at some points in the game make a platform appear without which you can't progress further. Graphics and music are not more than average and the jump controls feel strange and slow. labelimageminimize
Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu  Konami1986This is the first console game in the long-running Goemon series (only preceded by the arcade game [game=#3834]Mr. Goemon[/game], which gameplay-wise has not much to do with the Famicom version). You play the thief Goemon, some kind of Japanese Robin Hood, based on a real historical figure. In each stage you have to find three passes, which opens the gate to the next of the thirteen stages. Passes can be found in hidden underground passages, be bought in shops (amongst other useful extra items), or be found in first-person-view mazes. Money can be collected from slain enemies or hidden coin chests. Technically the game is very good and rather advanced for a mid-1986 title. I believe this was the very first 2Mbit cartridge and it shows with many different graphical environments. This game would eventually start a very successful game series, at least in Japan. However, the game does not yet feature the many hilarious characters and situations of the later Goemon games.***The Japanese title translates to something like 'Go Goemon! Tricking Adventure'. Karakuri means to trick or take a person by surprise (usually through mechanical means), but a karakuri ningyo (typically just called a karakuri) is also a type of Japanese puppet. The title may be a pun. Goemon is essentially the player's puppet during the game; however, the character of Goemon is also a thief (based on a real person), and thus his role in life is to trick people and steal things.

Jajamaru no Daibouken  Jaleco (Tose)1986The third game in the Ninja-Kun series from Jaleco. In contrast to the first two games you don't have to kill all enemies in each level to finish it. Here you have just to reach the exit door at the end of the level, which is scrolling from left to right. The game is a standard side-scrolling platform game borrowing many elements like destructible blocks with possible extra items from [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game]. The game is not bad, and a slight improvement over the other two Ninja games, but also not particularly groundbreaking or memorable. labelimageminimize
Getsufuu Maden  Konami1987"Getsufuu Maden" plays like a mix of [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] and [game=#7647]Castlevania[/game]. And as a bonus to the overworld map and side-scrolling action there are even three huge dungeons which you must explore in third-person perspective. The game is of high quality with lots of (short) levels, shops and interesting boss battles. Some repetitive parts can not be avoided however. There is lots of backtracking through already played levels. Graphics and music are good Konami standard, which means a step better than most other companies at that time. BTW: The box art is a special lenticular print (changing its image depending on which angle you look at it), so my box scan looks rather strange.*** labelimageminimize
Booby Kids  Nichibutsu1987"Booby Kids" (yeah that title is great) is a typical "collect all items to open the exit door" game. It is an arcade port, but the levels are all new and the gameplay adds something here and there (the TG-16 version [game=#10564]Cratermaze[/game] is a much more faithful port). You can trap enemies by digging holes. There are some extra items that slow down enemies or make you invincible for a short period of time. Sometimes you must bomb your way free to open up ways and find hidden items. The levels consist of different times zones, starting with a prehistoric-theme and ending with a futuristic setting. While the graphics change in each time zone the general gameplay elements stay the same. "Booby Kids" is worth to check out if you like maze / action games. labelimageminimize
Igo: Kyuu Roban Taikyoku  Bullet Proof Software (Edge Computers)1987This is a basic "Go" game featuring little ninjas as mascots. One player and two player modes are available, a little tutorial as well. The game is played on a small 9x9 board (the normal Go board is bigger). Nothing special really, but also without any obvious flaws. The cartridge version of this game was released four months after the Famicom Disk version and is virtually completely identical. labelimageminimize
Kaiketsu Yanchamaru  Irem;Data East (Tose)1987***Compared to other NES/Famicom titles from 1987, Kid Niki is a refreshingly simple and straight-forward platform game. No strange gameplay mechanics or complicated maze-like layouts. Quick reflexes is all that is needed. Of course the game has some secret areas, but they are not mandatory. The game controls are nice and the levels look different enough. The game only lacks a bit of variety in enemy types and the same music plays in nearly each level (with the exception of one cave level which has different music I think). labelimageminimize
Konami Wai Wai World  Konami1988
[30]***From time to time I get surprised by games, something that Konami Wai Wai World achieves. I did not expect a strange crossover platform/action title starring a dozen or so of Konami's heroes. The main protagonists are Konami-Man and Konami-Girl who try to rescue kidnapped Konami heroes from their respective levels. And there you have them all. Castlevania, The Goonies, Getsu Fuumaden, Goemon and even a classic vertical scrolling shooting level very similar to Twinbee and Life Force. Once you rescue one of the other Konami heroes you can switch to them whenever you want and use their special abilities which are sometimes needed in order to rescue the next hero. Otherwise the six starting levels can be finished in any order you want. Graphics are fine with lots of different stages and enemies and the music resembles the classic tunes of the other games which is a good idea. The bad part of the game is the gameplay itself, which is only slightly above average with some very difficult moments. Walking down stairs, and hitting enemies proved to be more annoying than I hoped.

Gun.Smoke  Capcom1988***
[142]***Gun.Smoke by Capcom takes you back to the days of the Gold Rush, to a small, bustling mining town of the Old West. Ruthless gold-stealing bandits are terrorizing the townsfolk and it's up to you to stop them! The thieves are notorious killers, and when they challenge you to a draw, they're playing for keeps! Although your gunslinging prowess is legendary, this may be the toughest High Noon you'll ever face. But you've got to stand your ground - this town ain't big enough for both you and them!***
[103]***
[33]***"Gun.Smoke" is a playable Commando-style run and gun game in a western setting. You play a lonesome gunslinger on his mission to stop a gang of bandits of terrorizing peaceful villagers. Graphics, sound and are decent. The game is relatively easy compared to other games of that era and controls are fine. The game has a small shopping feature where you can upgrade your standard weapon with money from money bags you collect on the way. "Strangest" gameplay element is the exclusively diagonal shooting from the hero, but after you get used to it it works well enough.***

Kamen no Ninja: Akakage  Toei (Shouei System)1988"Kamen no Ninja: Akakage" is a plaform-action game based on a Japanese tv and anime series. The hero has to make its way from left to right by jumping and running and killing (either by sword or ranged weapons) enemies, with a boss fight waiting for him at the end of the level. The game is not too bad compared with earlier games based on Toei anime series but there is also nothing really special. Graphics and music are OK. The levels are varied enough to a certain degree. But in the end I am sure I will have forgotten about this game in record time. labelimageminimize
Ninja-Kun: Ashura no Shou  UPL1988"Ninja-Kun: Ashura no Shou" is the sequel to Ninja-Kun: Majou no Bouken. It's bigger (31 levels!), and more varied than its predecessor. In some levels you have just reach the exit, other levels require you to kill all enemies. There are underwater swimming passages, some levels go mostly up, others go from left to right. But it's still not really good, because the game is hard. Really hard. Unfair hard. You know the typical climbing up a wall and with bad luck an enemy sitting at the edge which you impossibly can avoid? This game includes lots of those scenes. And the controls are not the best. Wall jumping, despite being necessary in later levels is hard to put off for example. One of those games that gave me lots of trouble finishing despite an endless lives cheat and save states.***Was planned to be published in North America as Ninja Taro by American Sammy. labelimageminimize

Gaiden can mean side-story or letter. For most games, Gaiden is used to denote that the game is a side-story in a series of games; not necessarily cannon or even part of established timeline. However, in the case of this game's title is actually means Letter. The story kicks off when the protagonists finds a letter written by his father who was recently killed in a duel.***Players take on the role of Ryu Hayabusa, a rising warrior in his family's clan whose main role in the world is to protect the Dark Dragon Blade from falling into the hands of evil. Ryu travels to America to seek vengeance for his father's death. Players fight their way through 14 challenging side-scrolling levels while defeating gangs of street thugs, battling evil ninjas and fighting barbarian bosses by using the deadly Dragon Sword, ninja skills and Ninpo (ninja magic). Players can run, crouch, jump and climb as they make their way through each stage and collect items to gain points, strength and weapons.

Use the most innovative technique of all - the ability to create Shadow Clones, orange shadow versions of Ryu that will constantly follow him, repeating previous actions (moving or attacking) in a delayed cycle. Once again defeat henchmen, creatures and bosses with new fighting techniques and even more weapons as you progress through multiple stages on your way to destroying Ashtar, Jaquio and the Realm of Chaos.***A classic hit from Tecmo, Ninja Gaiden II satisfied the people's desire for more butt-kicking ninja action. With more enemies, power-ups, and awesome ninja skills, you could have even more fun testing your ninja mettle.
With good graphics and a kicking soundtrack, it was definitely a pleasure to the senses. The only downside was the difficulty of the game; it's downright frustrating at times.
Enemies always appear at the most unopportune times to push you into a hole or knock you off a wall, but that makes it all the more satisfying when you complete the game.

Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom  Tecmo;Playtronic (Tecmo)1991Visually verified 0-18946-11010-3 is in fact the UPC code on the boxes for both Ninja Gaiden II and Ninja Gaiden III

The order of the trilogy is
1. Ninja Gaiden
2. Ninja Gaiden III
3. Ninja Gaiden II
The creators of the Ninja Gaiden III felt they could not find a suitable story to follow Ninja Gaiden II; so they created a story preceding the NG2 storyline but after the events of the original Ninja Gaiden.

The Japanese version had a password system which effectively gave players infinite continues. In a bold and rare occurrence, the USA version was purposefully made harder than the Japanese version in gameplay and by replacing the password system with a limited number of continues.***Join master ninja Ryu Hayabusa, last member of the famous Dragon Clan, in the third and final chapter of the legendary Ninja Gaiden saga. Ryu is framed for FBI agent Irene Lew's murder, and it's up to him to clear his name. Defeating superior life-forms created out of "life energy" called BIO-NOIDs and avoiding enemy ambushes are among the many obstacles which Ryu faces in this unpredictable adventure of mystery, deceit and destruction. Noticeable changes to the game-play mechanics include Ryu's ability to grab on to horizontal surfaces, his reduced falling speed and altered jumping maneuvers, and visible power-ups. Help Ryu defeat the forces of evil once more and discover the real culprit behind Irene's death as one of the most loved trilogies in video-game history comes to a close.
